The new 2017 Browning Strike Force 850 HD is a sub-micro trail camera designed to be a value wildlife camera. Improved trigger speed and battery life make this a winner. -TCP Staff
Model # BTC-5HD-850
The Strike Force 850 HD is the latest, greatest version of Browning's sub-micro trail cameras. This is a red glow trailcam, meant primarily for general wildlife viewing.
Photo resolution: 16, 8, 4, 2 mpxl
Video resolution: 1280x720 w/ audio
Flash Type: Red Glow Infrared
Picture quality is identical to 2016 models. The daytime pictures have good clarity, depth, and focus. They just lack vivid color.
Night pictures are really good. The Strike Force 850 has plenty of flash range and stops motion very well.

Video quality is nearly identical to picture quality. The audio works, but is weak, you'll need to turn your audio up to high.
Megapixel Ratings:
In the past, many people get confused with the megapixel rating trail camera manufacturers advertise. Companies inflate the mpxl rating to attract eyes to their products. They do this through interpolation, which digitally adds megapixels to a photo without actually improving the picture.
The best way to judge picture quality is to look at actual pictures. You will notice this the most when you zoom in on a full-size image that a camera has taken. The details of the photo will appear hazy or even digitized. This is normal, and to be expected.
Picture & Video Resting Power (on): 0.88 mW
Picture Daytime/Nighttime Power Consumption: 3.57 Ws | 5.42 Ws
Video Daytime/Nighttime Power Consumption: 15.7 Ws | 64.45 Ws
Battery life has stayed consistent and efficient. The consumption data has increased slightly from the 2016 models. This year, we are including video battery consumption and factoring it into our rating system on all our 2017 Trail Camera Reviews.
If this camera were to take 35-day and 35-night pictures every 24 hours, the Strike Force 850 HD would last 6.9 months in the field on a set of 6 AA Lithium Batteries. We consider this to be efficient, especially considering the camera only uses 6 batteries.
If this camera were to take 15-day and 15-night videos (10-second videos) every 24 hours, it would last 2.1 months in the field on a set of lithium batteries. Once again, considering the camera is only using 6 batteries, 2.1 months is very respectable video battery life.
Picture Trigger & Recovery Speed: 0.63 s. / 1.3 s.
Video Trigger & Recovery Speed: 1.15 s. / 1.6 s.
Detection Range: 70 ft.
There were no improvements to detection speed from the 2016 Strike Elite to this Strike Force 850. The picture/video trigger and recovery times are almost identical. This camera remains fast, especially the recovery times. Picture trigger time is slightly above average for a modern game camera.
Detection range is 70 ft.
Overall, we wish Browning would have improved the picture trigger speed in 2017 to at least match their 0.4 second advertised times. However, this is still an excellent detection circuit, especially considering the improved detection range.
Dimensions: 4.75" x 4" x 3"
Battery Type: AA Batteries
External Battery Jack: 12-Volt
Case Design
The Strike Force case design stayed the same in 2017. This is one of the smallest game cameras on the market, making it easy to conceal in a variety of ways. The camera feels sturdy and stable. The latch remains a touch close to the camera, making it somewhat difficult to unlatch with cold fingers.
There is a python bracket on the back of the Strike Force 850 HD for a Python Cable Lock. It also has the standard 1/4" x 20 threaded insert on the bottom for a Slate River Angle Mount.
Temperature ratings the camera records have a tendency of being unreliable and off by a significant margin.
Camera Setup
Camera setup is familiar and easy to navigate. Click "Mode" to enter the menu, tap "Up" or "Down" to toggle settings, hit enter to highlight a setting, change the desired setting with the up or down arrow, and then hit enter to save that setting. Very simple.
The Strike Force 850 is the first trail camera to accept 512 Gig SD Cards. That allows for tons of memory storage and most useful if placing the camera in video mode for long periods of time.
SD Card Storage Examples
With a 16 Gig SD card and the camera taking 4 mpxl photos (this is our recommended setting as it is closest to the native resolution), the Strike Force 850 could store 9,304 pictures on the SD card.
With a 16 Gig SD card and the camera taking 1280x720 videos (called "Ultra" video quality in the settings), the Strike Force 850 could store 258 10-second videos.
From this data, you can extrapolate out storage capacities of different sized SD cards and different resolution settings. We give you a 16 Gig SD card with the purchase of this camera through us. If you need additional or larger SD cards, you can shop all SD card options here.
Durability
The only issue we have noticed is a carry-over from 2016 models as well. If you turn the Strike Force off, while standing in front of the camera and with the recovery time set to 5 seconds (the fastest setting for recovery), the Strike Force will continue to shoot dozens of pictures as long as you are being detected. We hoped to see a firmware update that fixes this, but to date, we have not. In the meantime, a quick and dirty fix for this is to place your hand over the PIR lens of the camera while shutting it off. This will keep the camera from taking pictures.
Through our 2-year warranty program on the trail cameras we sell, we are able to track warranty rates on all trailcam manufacturers. We do not publish this data but Browning trail cameras have proven to be a durable camera for us. With the Strike Force 850 not changing in design or structure, we anticipate that will continue in this model. If an issue arises, we will update this Browning Strike Force 850 Review immediately.

Q: How do I view the pictures?
A: There are a number of ways to do this. Pictures/videos are stored on the SD card you place in the camera.
Q: Will the Strike Force Elite trigger on small animals (birds, rodents, etc.)?
A: Trail cameras detect on a combination of heat and movement, so, yes, small mammals will trigger the Strike Force 850. However, if you are going after smaller warm-blooded mammals, we recommend getting the camera closer to your target. For best performance, place the camera in an area that would enable picture detection from 3 - 20 ft.
Q: Can animals see the infrared flash on the Strike Force?
A: Yes. This is a red glow trail cameras, meaning it has a faint red glow when taking pictures or videos at night. Humans and animals can see this if looking at the camera. This does not "light up" the woods, though.
If you need an invisible flash (no glow), check out the Browning Dark Ops 940 HD. That is the no glow version of this model.
Q: Where can I purchase this camera?
A: From us! We hope to woo you with our incredible charm, two-year warranty, 90-day returns, free continental U.S. shipping, and technical expertise. If that isn't enough, we give you an 16 Gig SD card with this camera and you can call and talk our ear off anytime.
Seriously, though, we know you have plenty of options of where to spend your hard-earned money. The internet can be the wild, wild, west of too-good-to-be-true deals. If you choose to do business with us, we will go out of our way to make sure you are happy with the camera you select and the service we provide you.
We are passionate about testing and reviewing trail cameras, but most importantly, we are passionate about treating our customers the right way. We do things differently from what you have come to expect from other internet retailers and we hope you give us the opportunity to prove that to you.
